Compulsive behaviours:

Citizens are compelled to comply with laws and society. People are not 'compelled' to drink alcohol, gamble, use drugs, or other similar activities. Those are not compulsions, they are own decisions about how to behave.

The 'compulsions' are internal. Clients do have control of their actions.  When that concept is understood and accepted there can be a shift in thinking.

Control is important to people. Counselling encourages the reality that clients have control of most aspects of their lives. Realising and accepting that commonly brings an emotional shift in clients towards assisting their lives.
